Two sets of remains found in RileyCounty last month have been identified.
They are of a young mother and her toddler son and their deaths are being treated as homicides.
The bodies of 18-year-old Tanya Carmen Lydia Maldonado and her 15-month-old son, Juan Luis Maldonado were found October 25th near Ogden in RileyCounty.
The suspect is 22-year-old Luis Antonio Aguirre. Riley County police say he and Maldonado had a previous relationship but wouldn't discuss the nature of that.
The investigation crossed state lines, with Riley County detectives visiting Illinoisand Texas before arresting Aguirre.
“The suspect was subsequently arrested at approximately 10pm on Friday, October 30th and is currently confined in Austin, TX, at the Travis County jail on $2.5 million bond,” said Brad Schoen, the director of the Riley County Police Department.
The Maldonados' last known address was a rescue mission in Chicago while Aguirre's was this apartment in Ogden. No one answered the door there Monday. However, police say Aguirre had lived in Chicago.
“He was not active duty military,” Schoen said. “He was, or at least had been, we're unsure whether he still is or not, a member of the army national guard. And I believe his unit was based in the Chicago area.”
A hunter found the remains of the Maldonados in a shallow grave near Ogden, partially buried. The Shawnee County Coroner’s office assisted Riley Countypolice in the investigation.
Meanwhile, Aguirre's extradition hearing to Kansas is tentatively set for Wednesday in Texas.
