Murder-Suicide in Staunton

Staunton Police are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide, according to our sister station WHSV Harrisonburg.
Police say the shooting happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday (5/26) in the 600 Block of Grubert St. in Staunton. According to Police, 24-year-old Daniel Knight shot and killed his wife, 23-year-old Amber Knight before shooting himself.
Police were called at 8:36 p.m. Tuesday night by family who wanted a welfare check done at the home at 617 Grubert Avenue. That's when police discovered the bodies. Police believe the shootings happened Tuesday night but neighbors say they heard gunshots late Monday (5/25) or early Tuesday (5/26).
In the hours before the shooting, Daniel Knight posted several messages on his My Space page indicating that his death was near. Police report no history of violence at the home.
Neighbors on Grubert Avenue describe Daniel and Amber Knight as quiet people. The last thing they say they expected to hear was two loud booms.
Albert Whisman, a neighbor, says, "It sounded like 'boom boom.'"
When police went to see what happened, they found two bodies laying close together in the living room. Staunton police used force to enter the house.
The house was locked up with the blinds drawn, so the only sign of anything out of the ordinary were medical gloves lying on the ground.
Police say Knight used a high powered rifle to carry out the murder-suicide. While investigators wouldn't add much, they do say it was a terrible scene.
Officer Lisa Klein, with the Staunton Police Department, says the events are tragic.
Visibly shaken landlords went inside the home Wednesday, armed with garbage bags and towels. They made no comment.
Neighbors say they can't believe what happened.
Police say autopsies are being performed on Daniel and Amber's bodies in Roanoke.
