As a way to raise awareness and prevent domestic violence, the YWCA of Topeka's Center for Safety and Empowerment has announced its upcoming annual weeklong event.

"Embrace love, stop violence" is the theme for this year's YWCA Week Without Violence. The week will start at 5 p.m. Oct. 18 with a reflection vigil at Lake Shawnee botanical gardens. There will be a time of prayer and reflection during the vigil, and attendees will have the opportunity to share stories and create peace flags in honor of survivors.

From 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 19, the community can join in Chalk at the Capitol, an event aimed at families that will include carnival games, moonwalks, prizes, art activities and a hot dog dinner. Chalk at the Capitol will take place on the Capitol's south lawn. The event is free.

The film "Sin by Silence" will be shown from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. The film shows how inmates of the California Institute for Women advocate for a future without domestic violence. The women of Convicted Women Against Abuse talk about the stigma of domestic violence, reveal details and tell about the lack of options available to them. A panel discussion featuring Olivia Klaus, the film's producer and director, and Brenda Clubine, founder of CWAA, will follow the film.

For information about the film, go to www.sinbysilence.com .

A march and rally to end domestic violence will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 21. The march will start at the YWCA of Topeka, 225 S.W. 12th, and will end at the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas campus. The march will be followed by a free hot dog lunch, performers and speakers, including Curt and Christi Brungardt, whose daughter, Jana Mackey, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 2008. Information about Mackey can be found at www.1100torches.org .

A teen performance art night will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22. at The Break Room. Teens will showcase their talents in drawing, painting, photography, song, dancing and poetry regarding relationship violence.

Prizes will be awarded to the top entries in visual and performance art.

The Empowerment Now! Self-Defense Class will run from noon to 1 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the YWCA Health Arena. The self-defense class is free.

The final event will be Voices against Violence, a concert featuring Katlyn Conroy, who will perform from 9 p.m. to midnight Oct. 24 at Bosco's, 435 S. Kansas. Conroy is an indie, folk and acoustic artist from Lawrence. Cover charge is $5 at the door. All proceeds will go to the YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment.
